La Habra/Chino Hills, CA – At Gire Orthodontics, we understand that many patients may not want to draw more attention to their smiles while undergoing orthodontic treatment. That’s why we love treatment options like clear aligners and lingual braces. But what happens if the system you use suddenly shuts down its operations?
That’s exactly what is happening with patients who have used InBrace, a lingual braces option. Dr. Robert Gire explains what went wrong and what patients should expect moving forward.
“We have used InBrace for many patients because it has allowed them to meet their smile goals, without interrupting their lifestyles,” says Dr. Gire. “For many older patients who desire a straighter smile, options like InBrace have allowed them to continue to go about their professional and personal lives without drawing attention to their issues because the braces are completely hidden behind the teeth. But what do these patients do now?”
What went wrong
InBrace was created in 2012 at USC through a collaboration of three orthodontists and two engineers. Their work was celebrated, winning numerous awards, and their company was officially founded in 2014, raising more than $200 million. InBrace was introduced to the world, and many orthodontists embraced this new, innovative way to help their patients achieve their smile goals.
However, in April, InBrace sent letters to their partner orthodontists stating that as of that month, InBrace would no longer be in business. Here is an excerpt from that letter:
“It is with deep appreciation and sincere gratitude that we share the news that Inbrace will be seizing its operations. This decision was not made lightly and follows a thorough review of all strategic options available to us. The final product shipment date will be Monday, April 21st, 2025. This decision comes after an exhaustive effort to secure additional funding and evaluate all strategic alternatives.
Unfortunately, a combination of microeconomic factors, tightening capital markets, and slower-than-expected adoption has made it increasingly difficult to sustain the business, despite the promise of our technology and the dedication of our team and provider community. We are incredibly proud of the innovation we brought to the orthodontic space, offering patients a truly differentiated experience. We remain grateful to each of you who believe in our vision and help deliver that experience to your patients. Inbrace was more than a product; it was a shared commitment to innovation and patient-centered care.
While we are deeply disappointed by this outcome, we remain proud of what we built and accomplished together. Thank you for being part of Inbrace’s journey. It has been an honor to partner with you.”
What comes next for InBrace patients?
The news of InBrace closing operations came as a shock to the orthodontic world and has left patients currently in the middle of their InBrace treatment wondering what comes next for them.
“Luckily for our patients currently using InBrace, we have other discreet options available to finish out their treatment,” says Dr. Gire. “Clear braces are an option, as well as clear aligners. We will work with our patients to find the best option to meet their smile goals, while also remaining as discreet as possible.”
Symetri clear braces use polycrystalline alumina, which renders them virtually invisible. The brackets are even stain-resistant, while also being strong and effective. They are low-profile and smooth, making them comfortable to wear. Symetri clear braces can be an excellent alternative to InBrace.
Clear aligners offer a clear, comfortable, and removable option for patients switching from InBrace. Gire Orthodontics offers both Invisalign and Spark aligners, providing the best in clear aligner treatment for all patients.
Invisalign was the first clear aligner on the market, taking the orthodontic world by storm when it was introduced. It is available for use by both dentists and orthodontists and can treat a variety of malocclusions. Patients love it because it is virtually invisible and comfortable.
Spark aligners are the aligners that are predominantly used by only orthodontists. They are also made in Southern California, making a quick turnaround time for Gire Orthodontics patients to receive their aligners. Every treatment plan is fully customized to the individual patient, and Spark aligners can treat a host of orthodontic issues.
Dr. Gire and his team of experts will work with current Gire Orthodontic patients using InBrace to find the new treatment option that will be best to meet their smile goals. If you are an InBrace patient from a different orthodontic practice looking to switch, we offer complimentary consultations to help determine how to best meet your needs.
