Can You Get Both Top and Bottom Braces at the Same Time?

La Habra / Chino Hills, CA – If you’re preparing for a smile makeover, it’s natural to have questions. One of the most common is: Will I get both my top and bottom braces at the same time? According to Dr. Robert Gire, the answer depends on your unique smile and treatment needs.

“There isn’t a one-size-fits-all answer,” says Dr. Gire. “Every person’s smile is different, so treatment plans should be as well. Most patients do get both their top and bottom braces placed at the same appointment, but in some cases, it’s better to stagger placement to achieve the best results.”

Below, Dr. Gire explains how that decision is made and what patients can expect.

When Are Top Braces Placed First?

In certain situations, Dr. Gire may recommend placing the upper braces first, then waiting several weeks, or even a few months, before adding braces to the lower teeth. This approach can help ensure treatment is both comfortable and effective.

Some common reasons for placing top braces first include:

  • Managing a Deep Overbite. For patients with a significant overbite, the upper teeth may overlap the lower teeth enough to bite directly into newly placed bottom brackets. This can damage the brackets and cause unnecessary wear on tooth enamel. In these cases, Dr. Gire will wait to place the lower braces until there is enough space to protect both the teeth and the braces.
  • Reducing Initial Discomfort. Braces take time to get used to. For patients who are anxious about the adjustment period, starting with just the top braces can make the transition easier. Once you’re comfortable, the bottom braces can be added.
  • Focusing on Complex Tooth Movement. If one arch requires more extensive realignment, it may be more efficient to address that area first. By prioritizing complex movements in one arch, Dr. Gire can create a smoother and more predictable treatment process before moving both arches together.

Getting Top and Bottom Braces at the Same Time

For many patients, placing both top and bottom braces during the same appointment is the standard approach. This option is often convenient, as it allows treatment to begin all at once and reduces the need for multiple long bonding appointments, an important benefit for busy schedules.

What to Expect at Your Braces Appointment

Whether you’re getting braces on one arch or both, the process is straightforward and painless:

  • First, your teeth will be isolated with a retractor.
  • Your teeth will be thoroughly cleaned and dried.
  • A special adhesive will be applied to each tooth and then the brackets are applied.
  • Dr. Gire will carefully move each bracket for precise positioning.
  • A blue LED light will cure and harden the adhesive.
  • The archwire will be threaded through the brackets and secured. You’ll even get to choose a color to personalize your braces if desired.
