Invisalign Offers New Palatal Expander

Invisalign Offers New Palatal Expander

La Habra/Chino Hills, CAInvisalign revolutionized the orthodontic world when its aligners became widely available. They continued to improve upon their offering, making it an enticing choice for many orthodontic patients. And with the introduction of their new palatal expander, patients with even severe malocclusions may now be ideal candidates for Invisalign treatment.

What is a palatal expander?

A palatal expander works to widen the upper jaw in patients who have issues such as crossbites, overcrowding, and narrow arches. A traditional palatal expander is fixed to the upper jaw and is activated with a tiny screw or key that is used to manually adjust it.

What is different about the Invisalign palatal expander?

The Invisalign palatal expander system uses a series of 3D-printed expanders custom-created for the patient and designed to gradually widen the upper jaw to create the space needed. Unlike a traditional palatal expander that is made of metal and fixed in the mouth, the Invisalign palatal expander is removable. This makes it easy for your child to maintain their oral health.

Your child’s palatal expander will be created using iTero digital scans and Invisalign’s proprietary software. Just like your child progresses through a series of aligners, they will also progress through a series of expanders, each one designed to achieve the desired expansion. Then, once that expansion has been achieved, the jaw position will be held using Invisalign palatal holders.

“There are so many advantages to using the Invisalign system over a traditional palatal expansion system,” says Dr. Gire. “Patients like it because it is more comfortable than a metal expander, and it’s removable. They don’t have to worry about avoiding certain foods or having to spend a lot of extra time brushing around and under the expander. And parents love it because the expander system works to gradually expand the palate without the need for manually turning it.”

Who is a good candidate for Invisalign aligners and palatal expanders?

Invisalign palatal expanders can be used for patients ages 6-11 who require their upper jaws to be expanded. It is important to remember that an orthodontist is the best person to determine if your child is an ideal candidate for Invisalign. For some patients, traditional metal braces and palatal expanders may still be the best treatment choice.

“While Invisalign is an excellent treatment option and may be effective for many patients, there are some instances where conventional braces are still the best option,” says Dr. Gire. “This is especially true if we worry a patient may not be compliant with Invisalign treatment. Because the aligners and expanders are removable, the patient must wear them as directed to achieve their ideal smile.”
